Here I Go Again March 12, 2011

Read the lyrics to this song by Casting Crowns – they are haunting. Have you ever wanted to share Christ with someone but were just too afraid? You wanted to speak the words of life but instead ended up talking about the rain. Let this song inspire you towards boldness in your life. Like the song says…what am I so affraid of?

Here I Go Again by Casting Crowns        Listen to a sample of this song here.

Father, hear my prayer
I need the perfect words
Words that he will hear
And know they’re straight from You
I don’t know what to say
I only know it hurts
To see my only friend slowly fade away

So maybe this time I’ll speak the words of life
With Your fire in my eyes
But that old familiar fear is tearing at my words
What am I so afraid of?

Chorus:
‘Cause here I go again
Talkin ’bout the rain
And mulling over things that won’t live past today
And as I dance around the truth
Time is not his friend
This might be my last chance to tell him
That You love Him
But here I go again, here I go again

Lord, You love him so, You gave Your only Son
If he will just believe; he will never die
But how then will he know what he has never heard
Lord he has never seen mirrored in my life

This might be my last chance to tell him
That You love him
This might be my last chance to tell him
That You love him
You love him, You love him

What Am I so afraid
What am I so afraid
What am I so afraid of?
How then will he know
What he has never heard

I have a soft spot for many things…two of those being my kids and reading.  So, what could be better than reading with my kids?  I am always looking for good books to read with them, and boy did I come across a gem recently.  Let’s Go on a Mommy Date, by Karen Kingsbury recently tugged my heartstrings as we read it together.  I won’t give away the ending…but take note that my kids still don’t want to return it to the library!

Preparing My Heart for Grandparenting November 2, 2010

submitted by author and Northshore’s own Lydia Harris

Preparing My Heart for Grandparenting is off the press! And I’m excited to see how God will use this Bible study. Years ago my niece, Ann Marie Stewart, encouraged me to write part of the “Preparing My Heart” Bible study series for AMG Publishers. Ann had written other studies in the series (Advent, Easter, and Motherhood) and saw the need for one on grandparenting. Although I had published hundreds of stories, devotions, articles, book reviews, and columns, writing a Bible study was a new genre for me.

Now, 18 months after I signed the contract to write Preparing My Heart for Grandparenting, I’m thrilled to introduce my new “baby.” This study was homegrown at Northshore Baptist Church as members prayed, encouraged me, and shared stories and quotes. As you read it, you’ll find the fingerprints of Northshore pastors and wives and numerous grandparents, some of whom have been married over 50 years and have 24 or more grandchildren! What a wealth of wisdom!
This six-week Bible study affirms grandparents in their significant role and offers creative and fun ideas to use with grandkids. It encourages grandparents to set a good example, join their grandkids’ fan club, and intentionally pass on their faith. Since grandparenting isn’t all fun and games, the book also includes ways to handle tears and disappointments.
The study is suitable to do alone, as a couple, and in church or community groups. Although written for grandparents, others without grandchildren said, “It’s useful for anyone involved with children.”
Those who tested the study had grandchildren from preschool age to adults. Their comments included, “It enriched my ideas of grandparenting, I loved the heartwarming stories, and it encouraged me to pray.”  The humorous stories from dozens of grandparents make it lighthearted. The Scripture and thought-provoking questions make it deep.
God equipped me to write this God-sized project through my teaching and writing background, my experiences as a grandmother of five, and biblical training at Northshore Baptist. If you’re a grandparent or know someone who is, please help me spread the word. Consider this combination Bible study and how-to book for yourself or as a gift. For more information, including sample pages of the lessons, go to www.PreparingMyHeart.net. You can also read my grandparenting blog there.
Please pray with me that God will use this Bible study to bless future generations. To God be the glory!

Movie Review: Invictus September 21, 2010

By Julie Guest

This weekend we watched one those movies that stays with you long after you turn the TV off. Invictus tells the story of Nelson Mandela’s struggle to bring unity to a divided South Africa through rugby. This movie is a story of forgiveness and reconcilation.

My favorite quote of the movie comes when Mandela (Morgan Freeman) is talking to a group of recently liberated black South African’s who were lobbying to have rugby taken away from the Afrikaner (whites) who live for the sport. He said, “We have to surprise them with forgiveness and generosity.” This quote reminds me of how we are to respond to our world because of what Christ has done for us.

Colossians 3:13
Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

Décor: I’m a interior design nerd. These are some of my favorite décor blogs where real people are decorating their real homes on a real budget. Enjoy!

www.younghouselove.com This adorable couple is a professional blogging duo who updates their site sometimes twice a day. So, if you’re really attached to your blogs, as I am, you will appreciate    their frequency. They have fresh, sweet ideas, as well as great DIY and money saving tips.

www.thenester.com This is the cutest stay at home mom, located in North Carolina, who has great seasonal décor ideas among others.

www.thriftydecorchick.com This gal is the funniest and most casual, easy to read blogger I’ve found. Her style is sometimes “too homemade” for me, but I admire her efforts and spirit. Hope you enjoy her, too.

Food:

Joy the Baker: I needed to pick up a hobby that would force me away from the computer so I decided I wanted to learn how to bake. I don’t like to cook much but I love to bake. My husband loves to cook and doesn’t really like to bake and that works out perfect for us. I stumbled across Joy the Baker while searching for baking sites. I think she’s funny, informative and she loves butter. She also does her own photography. Just recently she helped her little sister move to Seattle. She has an extensive recipe index in which I refer to every week.

White on Rice Couple: I just recently subscribed to this blog so I haven’t tried out any of the recipes. They look very tasty. I have an interest in the fruits, salads, vegetables and dips section.

Friends:

I only have one in this category. His name is Ben and he has cancer. He used to work here at Northshore in the IT department and I’ve learned lots of techie stuff from him. I pray for him every day. He encourages me to stay strong in my walk with the Lord under hard situations.

Reviews by Lydia Harris

Zack, You’re Acting Zany!
By Marty Nystrom
Illustrated by Steve Bjorkman
Standard Publishing, 2010

Marty Nystrom has done it again. After writing his popular Don’t Mess with Moses book of humorous poems based on Old Testament stories, now he’s written a sequel from New Testament passages. As an elementary teacher, Marty saw how kids loved funny poems and decided there should be amusing rhymes based on the Bible. So he wrote them!

Zack, You’re Acting Zany! begins with a poem about the first “gospel quartet”– Mathew, Mark, Luke and John and ends with a poem about Jesus never changing based on Hebrews 13:8. And in-between, Marty includes about 120 poems ranging in length from two to twenty lines or more. The lyrics provide a fun, thought-provoking read for kids and adults alike.

(Click book for a link to Amazon.com. Part of the proceeds come back to NSB.)

I purchased both of Marty’s books as gifts for my older grandsons, ages 9 and 11. But so far, I’ve kept his latest book to read at Grandma’s house. After I tucked my grandsons in bed on a recent sleepover, I read poem after poem to them. Then I gave them a flashlight and said they could keep reading a while longer if they wished. What kid doesn’t want to read after “lights out”?

Here’s an example of Marty’s witty and winning writing.
It’s gross enough
That John the Baptist
Gobbled up grasshoppers.
But here’s what makes it even worse-
The kind he chomped were whoppers!
(Read Mark 1:6 to find out what else John ate.)

Marty’s humorous rhymes and colorful words entertain and teach kids at the same time. Steve Bjorkman’s amusing paintings add even more color as they capture the poem’s content and help tell the story. Each poem ends with a comment or question and a Bible reference, so readers can look up the passage the poem is based on.

You may be surprised to learn this local author of “playful poems and riveting rhymes” has also written more than 100 worship songs, including “As the Deer.” Just as his music helps your heart sing, his captivating poems “sing” as you read them aloud. Consider these books as gifts for children or an adult who’s still a child at heart. They’ll tickle your fancy.

What Will I Be When I Grow Up?
By Susan Snyder
Illustrated by Valeria Cis
Harvest House Publishers, 2009

My four-year-old grandson, Owen, and I love to read together when we travel. While Grandpa chauffeurs us, we sit together in the back seat, reading stories.  What will I Be When I group Up? is one of the books we recently enjoyed. Written for children from preschool to third grade, it includes colorful paintings of people in nine different careers.

Each two-page spread asks, “Will I be . . .” and mentions a different vocation, such as a nurse, farmer, hairstylist, or builder. The response to each question is, “Maybe, but even if I’m not . . .” and then includes something the child can do, along with a Bible verse that emphasizes that thought. For example, for one vocation, Snyder asks, “Will I be an author and write interesting stories for children to read?” She answers, “Maybe, but even if I’m not . . . I can write notes and cards and send them to people to cheer them up.” The verse to accompany that thought is Hebrews 3:13, “Encourage one another daily.”

As Owen and I read the book, we discussed each page. In response to the question about becoming an author, we talked about how much fun it is to receive mail. When we arrived home, I supplied Owen with paper, crayons, and scissors, and he cheerfully “wrote” notes (pictures and his signature) to his cousins, and I mailed them.
What Will I Be When I Grow Up? plants the seed that no matter what the child becomes, the most important thing is to live his or her life to please God.

Lydia E. Harris loves being a grandmother. She is looking forward to two births this summer: her fifth grandchild and her new book, Preparing My Heart for Grandparenting (available at Christianbook.com and amazon.com).

Other Blogs We Love July 13, 2010

So…now that your are officially a “blogger” we thought you might enjoy a few recommendations from Northshore trendsetters who were reading blogs before the rest of us knew what they were!

Christian Blog Recommendations by Tracie Dickerboom

Here are a few of my random faves:
This is Beth Moore’s blog. She and her daughter post spiritual things, family things, humorous stuff, etc. Great blog for all those Beth Moore lovers out there!

Chances are, if you like Beth Moore, you love her buddy Travis Cottrell and his blog. He doesn’t write a lot, but when he does it is worth the read. Usually funny, sometimes he includes family tidbits, spiritual things, etc. On a side note, the first time I saw Travis Cottrell and Beth Moore live was at Northshore years ago…sweet memory….ok, back to the point…

This is Paul Baloche’s blog. He is a worship leader/songwriter who many will recognize. Love his advice/tidbits on leading worship…totally humble leader.

Cooking Blog Recommendations: by Lauren Neal

I’m a wannabe chef. The only thing holding me back is that I don’t have a true love of cooking. The only thing driving me forward is an intense love of eating. And, there I am stuck in the middle…these blogs help me make it through weeknight dinners…. Bon Appétit!

The Pioneer Woman Don’t be swayed by the name of the blog. I expected a toothless, back-woods, old-lady-in-the-shoe type thing. This could not be further from the truth! She has AMAZING recipes and photography. I highly recommend anything she posts, recipe-wise. She is funny and easy to read. She has a new cookbook out, now, too for those interested.

Gimme Some Oven I’m slightly biased to this one, since its done by a second cousin of mine, but it is fantastic, and every recipe that I’ve tried has been excellent. Great variety in recipe offerings, too.

And, although its not a blog, per se, I highly recommend using the recipe planner Relish! It is $7/mo, and I’ve used it every week for 3 yrs. It has amazing recipes, the ability to enter your own recipes, and then once the weekly menu is chosen, it spits out a super organized grocery list. It is a life saver, for those of us busy women, who like to make great recipes, but don’t have the time to hunt all over the place.

Book Review by Lynn Wolter

there is no me without you

by Melissa Fay Greene

This is the story of Haregewoin Teferra, an Ethiopian woman who reluctantly agreed to take in two of Addis Ababa’s thousands of AIDS orphans after the loss of her husband and daughter.   Through the years many more orphans found their way to her doorsteps.  Teferra’s home turned into an orphanage and she facilitated adoptions to homes all over the world. From this book you will learn about Ethiopia’s history, the AIDS crisis, and the pharmaceutical companies.  Bottom line:  it’s about children and their parents wherever they live, and I promise it will tug at your heartstrings.  Enjoy!

Summer Reading Recommendations June 12, 2010

by Tina Bustamante

For a thoughtful summer read THE HELP by Kathryn Scott.

THE HELP tells the story of three unique women during the 1960’s in Jackson, Mississippi. I laughed out loud in a few parts, got choked up a time or two, and thought long and hard about the things in our lives that bring us together as friends, and the areas that exclude us from one another.

(Click on any of the book photos and it will take you to Amazon. If you purchase the book through this link, NSB gets part of the proceeds.)

For Reflective, spiritual input - THE ME I WANT TO BE by John Ortberg

Summers are a unique time in my year to slow down, enjoy long walks, and think about what God has done over the fall and winter months. I make new goals, and try to hear where He is leading me, and what He is calling me into during the upcoming year. John Ortberg is the Senior Pastor at a church in California. This is his latest book. I bought it on my kindle! Yes – my kindle! It is a book about becoming who God created us to be. Ortberg is a gentle teacher who consistently reveals the kindness of God, and how He is genuinely for us, rather than against us. It’s a good read for reflection, journaling, and cultivating your intimacy with Jesus.

For a hearty biography – BONHOEFFER: PASTOR, MARTYR, PROPHET, SPY by Eric Metaxas

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German pastor before and during WWII. He is well known for his book titled, THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP and his attempt to assasinate Adolf Hitler, for which he was ultimately martyred. Metaxas writes in an easy style and brought me into the book within the first few pages. I enjoy studying the lives of people who have gone before me, and how they learned to walk with God in their generation, and stand for truth in their time. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a remarkable man who followed out his commitment to God in the midst of horrific and terrifying evil.

For fun, lighthearted, and witty book series – The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Andrew McKall Smith.

For a few years now I’ve been reading books in this series. They take place in Botswana and follow the life of a charming lady detective name Precious Ramostwe. They are wonderful vacation books – for the airplane, or beside the pool, on the bicycle, or in the morning before Vacation bible school starts. While they are light and fun, don’t be surprised at the hidden wisdom and kind tenderness you discover in the character’s lives and hearts.
