Homemade Sugar Scrub May 14, 2011

Am I the only discouraged by the prices of beauty products these days?  I don’t think I am and not only that, have you read the ingredients on your favorite lotions and potions?  What IS all that stuff?  I’m just not sure and so should I really be smearing it all over my largest organ (my skin)?  Well, you have to start somewhere when it comes to being cleaner, greener and cheaper so why not start here?

Our NSB MOPS group made homemade sugar scrub for our craft last week and I’ve had quite a few requests to put it all down and let you know just how you can do the same thing at home.  At the cost of about $1.50/batch, it beats the pants off of anything you could find at your local health food store.  It’s perfect for your everyday needs and makes wonderful gifts, too.

Homemade Sugar Scrub

1 c suspension oil (light olive, grape seed or almond oil will work but we used olive)
1/2 organic sugar
4 drops essential oils (we used lavender, peppermint & lemongrass)

Mix all together.  Yields one “serving.”  Serving = 8 oz of scrub that fits in 8 oz containers found at….

Cash & Carry in Lynnwood – 8 oz containers with lids.  Lids & containers sold separately so one package of each is required.  Lids – $3.30 for 50  Containers – $3.60 for 50

Organic raw sugar found at Costco 10 lbs for about $9.00
Lightest olive oil (so it doesn’t have flavor or scent) a gallon + for about $19.00
Essential Oils found at Whole Foods.  Many, many scent choices that vary greatly in price.

Labels.  Downloaded from marthastewart.com, brought to Staples on a thumb drive and had them print on sticky paper.  One sheet = 6 labels = $1.20.

Tie it up with a pretty ribbon and you are ready to go!

Now, if you are just making it for yourself, you can forgo the label and ribbon but those add a nice touch if you are giving a gift.
