As we look to discover how the wisdom found in the book of Proverbs over the next several weeks, I thought it would be greato to share some of our favorite Proverbs with one another. If there is a particular proverb that has deeply impacted your life, feel free to share that here. One proverb that has always stuck with me and caused me to pursue purposeful relationship with other men who want to chase hard after God is Prov. 27:17. How about the rest of you?
Our New Series
Posted by on September 16, 2008Do you know Dave?
Posted by on July 29, 2008
So this Thursday we are launching our new series entitled “Meet Dave”. We will be looking at the life of David from when he was a wee lad tending sheep to when he was King. Along the way he experiences the ups and downs of real life. Through all of it, David pursues God. It is refreshing to study such an authentic character and see even in the midst of struggle, a passion to pursue God.
Maybe you studied David once or twice in your life. Maybe you grew up hearing about how he slayed Goliath. I want to know two things:
1. What are your favorite stories about David?
2. What questions do you have about the life of David?
See you Thursday!

It takes a Unified & Diversified Village
Posted by on June 27, 2008
Introduction
1996 – Hillary Clinton, then First Lady, wrote a book entitled “It takes a Village: and other lessons Children teach us”. Her opponents, Bob Dole accepting the Rep. Nominee for Pres. In 1996 said “…with all due respect, I am here to tell you, it does not take a village to raise a child. It takes a family to raise a child.”
If you want to see the transformation of a community it takes a village, but not any village, it takes a village UNIFIED and DIVERSIFIED.
Read Nehemiah 3
What is amazing about this chapter is that we have all of these people helping out, all of these people are pitching in, in a unified and diverse team. Priests, nobleman, merchants, goldsmiths, temple servants, officials, and families all did their part. This is a wide variety of people. This is how the body of Christ needs to function. All unified: Under one God, under one mission, and fully diversified in function and ability
How you are wired by God
The body of Christ is designed to work like this, just look at Rom. 12, 1 Cor. 12, and Eph. 4. Each of us have a divine design that comes from our Maker in heaven. We have all been made for a masterpiece. Eph. 2:10 says that we are his workmanship, one version says that we are His masterpiece. Each one of us has been crafted by a master craftsman. Each one of us has passions, gifting, and skills that are to be used to advance the kingdom of God.
Passion – What would you do if you didn’t need to make money? What do you find yourself doing?
Spiritual Gifts – if you are a leader, you need to lead. If you are an encourager, you need to encourage, etc.
Skills – Erik, the IT guy serving in Sudan.
Imagine for an instance, doing what you are passionate about, using your spiritual gifts and the skills you have acquired along the way. If you don’t know what you are interested in, what your gifts or skills are, talk with me. There are plenty of tests to take online or for little cost that can point you in the right direction.
The beauty of what happened with Nehemiah and the Village, was that each person, pitched in, did their part and the things got done.

The heart of the Nehemiah Series - Jer. 29:7
Nehemiah 2:1-9
The king opened up the checkbook to Nehemiah and before answering, Nehemiah prayed. Then he reached for the sky and it was granted to him. What are some of the audacious asks that you have for God? Ask Big, he can handle it.
Nehemiah 2:11-16
Nehemiah assesses the wall. He sees for the first time for himself how run down the walls really are and what a huge undertaking this is going to be. There is a reason why the walls had yet to be rebuilt, it was quite a daunting task. Over a mile long, 4 ft. thick, 20 ft. high. It was going to take a lot. What in your life needs assessing? Take some time this week to assess where you are at with God personally, how the local community is, and assess the needs of the global community. How can you be specific in your prayers? Ask the God os restoration to rebuild the walls of your heart, the heart of your local community, and the heart of the world.
Nehemiah 2:17, 18 - Nehemiah calls the people to this great audacious task and says that God is behind it.
Nehemiah 2:19-20
Opposition arrises from the South, the North, and the East. In an attempt to disuade Nehemiah from rebuilding the walls, the opposition begins with words. Instead of trying to outwit them himself, Nehemiah swimply placed his faith in His God to grant them success. Are you feeling opposed by anyone? 1 Peter 5:8-9 says that the devil is constantly on the search to take people out when given the chance. Whenever we look to follow Jesus, we need to know that there will be opposition, however, we also need to have the Faith of Nehemiah to say, regardless of how big the task, how great the opposition, our God will grant us success.
How big are your prayers?
Posted by on June 16, 2008
“Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation” - Jesus. That is not a small ask…when Jesus thought…he was thinking big. Paul had similar thoughts - “Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us…” When we pray, we need to think BIG.
If we really do believe that God wants to transform the community around us, then we need to not only pray, but we need to pray BIG. Thank you for your commitment this last Thursday evening to pray for our community. Would you join me and pray BIG. Allow your heart to dream about what could happen in our community and pray for it. Let’s pray with the expectancy that the God of the Universe, the King of Kings and Lord of ALL is going to be involved.
All Together - It begins with Prayer
Posted by on June 13, 2008Nehemiah 1
This new Series is entitled All Together because it is a study not only of the book of Nehemiah, but also about how we as a community can work together with our Lord to change our local community here and ultimately the world. Jer. 29:7 says “seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” We are called to impact our community. The place to being is on our knees in prayer to seek the peace and prosperity for our community here in Bothell.
Background on Nehemiah
Nebuchadnezzar became king of Babylon in 605 BC and soon after he invaded Judah and after Judah was under the rule for three years they rebelled. Several years later in response Neb. captured anything of value from Jerusalem including roughly 10,000 of the leaders of Jerusalem (Read 2 Kings 24:10-14). Can you imagine what it would look like if the Greater Seattle area was robbed of all of it’s treasures and 10,000 leaders? Following this there were three returns to Jerusalem by the exiles. The first was by Zerubbabel in 538 BC. They rebuilt the temple during this time. Persia had taken over Babylon and had agreed to let their be a return of exiles. The second party returned with Ezra about 80 years later. The third wave came back with Nehemiah in 445 BC. This is where they rebuild the walls and gates as documented in the book of Nehemiah.
Nehemiah 1:1-4
Nehemiah’s Response
Brokenness
Nehemiah is completely broken over the news of the plight of the people in Jerusalem. His reaction is beautiful. The Lord struck his heart in such a way that he was broken on behalf of the people of his community. Are you broken by the plight of our community? I know that we have not been invaded by some earthly enemy, but haven’t we watched our community become overrun by the enemy of our God? Haven’t we seen our community fall victim to the trappings of the world, been seduced by the evil one, we have seen our families fall apart, we have seen marriages ripped apart, we have seen the rise of crime, drug use, pronogrpahic addictions rip through our communities, and the desire for bigger, better, and never enough self love is everywhere. Does your heart break for our community? Do you want to see your community healed? Then we need to do the same thing that we find Nehemiah doing, we need to pray.
Prayer
Nehemiah’s first response to this devastating news was to pray. Read Neh. 1:5-11. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says “if my people who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
There are some keys found in Nehemiah’s prayer and in the instructed prayer of 2 Chron.
1. Worship in humility – we need to understand that it is not us that are going to make the difference, it is going to be God, therefore like Nehemiah, we need to exalt His name.
2. Confession. Secondly we need to confess our own sin and the sin of our community on behalf of our community and come to God in repentance. Nehemiah expresses this beautifully as he confesses the sins of his people.
3. Seek His face – As we listen for His voice, as we do His will, then the Lord will heal our community.
Conclusion
Does your heart break for our community? Let’s decide tonight to pray for our community, to pray like Nehemiah and to own up to our own sin and to own up to the sin on behalf of our community. We have been a community who has placed many gods before the ONE TRUE GOD, we have destroyed the family, we have stolen, we have abused, we have committed adultery, we have committed murder, we have coveted our neighbor’s things, we have been self seeking in our workplace, in our families, all over. We need to repent and turn back toward our God. Lord, please forgive our community of our trespasses against you and heal our land.
Fantasy Football already?

Ladies, you are invited to participate as well, this is not a guy’s only event. First come, first serve. Email me for a spot.
Spirituality found on a pole?
Posted by on May 30, 2008There is a story of a monk named Simon the Stylite, who sat atop a fifty-foot pole outside of Antioch for forty years in order to re-direct his mind, body, and soul to God. He decided that to be the most spiritual that he could be meant that he needed to stay atop this pole for 40 years. In fact, there are many stories of ascetic monks who deprived their minds and bodies of many things in order to become more spiritual to focus on Jesus. After studying the book of Galatians together, perhaps you have a different idea on becoming more “spiritual.” What do you do or where do you go to grow in your spirituality?
Live Free…in the Spirit
Posted by on May 30, 2008Main Text - Galatians 5:13-26
Walk by the Spirit (vs. 16 and 25) – Paul indicates that there is an intentionality to walking by the Spirit, it does not simply happen on its own, a believer has to choose to walk in the Spirit.
Eliminate those things which quench the Spirit (vs. 19-21) – one way to do this is to confess your sins to one another and a great place to do this is within the context of a small group. If you are not in a small community think seriously about surrounding yourself with a group of believers who you can share your life with.
Fruit Production of several kinds
Mark 11:20-25 – the fruit of prayer and forgiveness
Gal. 5:22-23 – the fruit of character
Mark 16:15 – the fruit of new life (evangelism, mission)
Fruit Inspection – Luke 13:6-9 if you have felt stagnant, that there has not been much fruit produced in your life, know that God is patient with you because He loves you. Let Him “dig around” in your heart a little bit and see what happens.
