A New Reality - New Reality Relationships

Posted by chriss on November 17, 2008

Main Text - Ephesians 5:21-6:9

1.  Which relationships in your life have been used to teach you about your relationship with God?

2.  Read 5:21-33.  According to this passage, (and you can bring in other Scripture if you want to), in a marriage relationship, what is the husband held accountable for?

3.  In the marriage relationship what is the wife responsible for?

4.  How is the marriage relationship supposed to be a microcosm of the relationship between Jesus and the Church?

5.  How can you individually grow in taking responsibility for your role in your marriage according to Ephesians 5:21-33?

6.  Does it shock you that on average the father in the United States spends 12 minutes per day with their kids?    Why is time so valuable with them?

7.  What do you find to be most difficult in raising your children?

8.  What does it mean to exasperate your child, or to bring them to anger?  How can you avoid this while still expecting obedience from your kids?

9.  Have you ever written down goals for raising your kids so that you could be more intentional about trying to develop strong Christ-like characteristics in them?

10.  After reading Eph. 6:5-9, describe what the perfect relationship between employer and employee looks like.  Does this describe your work situation?  If not, what can you do to influence the work environment toward that end?

11.  If it is true that our relationships in this world teach us about our relationship about God, what have you learned over the last number of years about who God is?

A New Reality - Purity of the Heart

Posted by chriss on November 9, 2008

Main Text - Ephesians 5:1-14

1.  Do you agree with the assessment that we live in a highly sexualized culture?  It was powerful listening in on the discussion of the high school students and Pastor Jonathan talking about what it looks like in their life.  Describe how you see this in your world.  How is your world bombarded with sexuality?

2.  Read Eph. 5:1-14.  Describe a life of sexual purity.

3.  Why do you think that Jesus lays out boundaries for sexual purity?

4.  Why do you think the culture frequently rejects the boundaries the Lord has put into place?

5.  Is your sexuality submitted to God?

6.  What have you done to live purely in this culture?

7.  What concerns do you have in this area, for yourself, your children, the church, or the world?

8.  For those who have children who are single, what is the best way to address these issues with them?

9.  The closing song this week was “Mighty to Save” by Hillsong.  Here are the lyrics:

Everyone needs compassion,

Love that’s never failing;

Let mercy fall on me.

Everyone needs forgiveness,
The kindness of a Saviour;
The Hope of nations.

Saviour, He can move the mountains,
My God is Mighty to save,
He is Mighty to save.

Forever, Author of salvation,
He rose and conquered the grave,
Jesus conquered the grave.

So take me as You find me,
All my fears and failures,
Fill my life again.

I give my life to follow
Everything I believe in,
Now I surrender.

My Saviour, He can move the mountains,
My God is Mighty to save,
He is Mighty to save.
Forever, Author of salvation,
He rose and conquered the grave,
Jesus conquered the grave. (x2)

Shine your light and let the whole world see,
We’re singing for the glory of the risen King…Jesus (x2)

My Saviour, He can move the mountains,
My God is Mighty to save,
He is Mighty to save.
Forever, Author of salvation,
He rose and conquered the grave,
Jesus conquered the grave. (x2)

Shine your light and let the whole world see,

We’re singing for the glory of the risen King…Jesus.

Jesus is mighty to save, to rescue us.  What has Jesus rescued you from and what do you need to ask Him to rescue you from?  Spend some time sharing and praying for one another.

Also, this would be a good time to find out if everyone in the group is connected in an accountable relationship and if not to get everyone connected.

A New Reality - Spent for Jesus and the Gospel

Posted by chriss on October 26, 2008

Main Text - Phil. 4:10-21

1.  Who are the “heroes” of the faith that you have connected with over the years.  Pastor Jonathan shared that one of his is Hudson Taylor, missionary to China.  What is is about this person or people that makes you admire them?

2.  It seems like if you are going to make a difference in people’s lives there is typically a cost that is attached with that.  What was the cost for the apostle Paul?

3.  What are some character traits that Paul displayed and perhaps some of the “heroes” that we were discussing earlier that allowed them to persevere through difficult times?

4.  Read 2 Timothy 4:6-8.  Paul was being poured out on behalf of Jesus and the gospel.  If you were to do an inventory of your life, what have you been spending yourslef on over the last few years?

5.  What do you want to be spending yourself on in the next few years?  If this is a change, what needs to change in your life to make this happen?  How are you willing to let the group help you in this?

6.  Paul goes on in the letter to the Phillippians and he challenges followers of Jesus to be willing to spend their time, talent, and treasure for the Kingdom.  Which one of these is easy for you to give, and which one is the most difficult? Why?

7.  Do you honestly believe verse 19?  What are the implications of this verse even in the midst of the current economic situation our nation, if not the world, is facing?  If you believe this, what are the practical applications of this verse currently for you today?

Think about ways in which you as a group could be spent for Jesus and the gospel.
