Human Trafficking:  The Local View  May 21st @ 7PM, room 212-213  Human trafficking is a $32 billion global industry, the fastest-growing and second-largest criminal activity in the world. A welcome convergence of attention and political will has pushed Washington State to the front lines of the battle.  It is comfortable to think trafficking is ‘over there-or international’ – and it is.  But it is also in our own back yard. The AWARE organization documented loosing 300 young girls from Portland high schools, and another 100 from Vancouver high schools, last year alone.  How many were lost from Northshore or Lake Washington?  How many is too many?  What if it was your daughter, or granddaughter?  Come and learn about what trafficking looks like in Seattle, in Bothell, and the many opportunities there are to become involved, to make a difference in our community, and in God’s Kingdom.

Informational meeting on May 21st at 7 PM in rooms 212-213 Northshore Baptist Church

April 2 Sewing B

Posted by brendab on March 28, 2012 in Local Outreach with No Comments

Monday April 2nd from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm in the Student Center, is an opportunity to join Northshore’s Sewing B.  Seamstresses of all abilities meet monthly to sew projects such as pillowcase dresses to be sent to Nicaragua and other countries, chair packs and weighted lap pads used right here in the Northshore and Lake Washington School Districts.  Last month 105 sundresses were sent along with the women’s mission team to Los Cedros, Nicaragua.  In an earlier mission trip to Nicaragua the Sewing B group sent  40 dresses along with the mission team. After the dresses had been distributed, a little girl came up to receive her dress and cried when she found out there were no more dresses.  Another girl selflessly gave up the dress she had just received to her younger friend.  This young girl had no idea if she would receive another dress for herself.  Hearing the story the Sewing B group made her 2 very special dresses to choose from.  They were taken to her by the next mission team to go to Los Cedros. Sewing B will meet again May 7th and will be making t-shirt dresses to be sent to India.  Donations of pillowcases, sheets, fabric, trims for dresses are thankfully accepted.  Please contact Ruth Wright

Volunteers and HOPE Mobile Medical Unit

Posted by brendab on March 27, 2012 in Local Outreach with No Comments

Each week the Mobile Medical Unit, aptly named HOPE, is driven from North Seattle to the Northshore Baptist Church Campus and set up to provide a warm, safe, and caring place for people from our congregation and our community to receive needed medical care. The Mobile Medical Unit is driven by volunteer drivers. Each week volunteers come from work and home to gather for prayer and a warm meal before going to their “stations” for the evening clinic. The warm meal is provided by volunteers. More volunteers provide support for the HOPE clinic by serving as Doctors, Nurses, Receptionists, Volunteer Coordinators, Site Coordinators, Case Managers, Schedulers, Spiritual Care, and Floaters (volunteering where most needed). Each person, serving in one part of the equation, adds up to a ministry of serving our Lord Jesus Christ through serving the needs of those around us. Opportunities to serve on this ministry team are available. For an application, more information about what the application process entails or other questions about Community Health Ministries contact us at Communityhealth@nsb.org.

Blood Drives at Northshore Baptist Church

Posted by brendab on March 9, 2012 in Local Outreach with No Comments

Thank you to the 38 registered donors who came to NSB to donate blood on Monday February 27th.  The Puget Sound Blood Center staff was able to collect 32 units of volunteered blood which went towards saving or dramatically improving the lives of up to 96 patients in the Puget Sound area.  Each day, nearly 900 people must register to donate blood through Puget Sound Blood Center to meet the local demand, and fewer than five percent of the people who are able to give blood actually do so – and most of them give only once a year.   The next  opportunity to donate blood at NSB will be Monday April 30 from 1:00 pm – 7:00 pm.  Give a little – it gives a lot.  Donating blood only takes about 1 hour and can help three people.

Small Group Opportunity – Painting Apartment for KITH

Posted by brendab on March 9, 2012 in Volunteer Opportunity with No Comments

KITH (Kirkland Interfaith Transitions in Housing) has an empty apartment in their Kingsgate property.  The unit was previously designated for permanent housing and the family moved out after living there for 10 years. When it is ready the unit will be used to house homeless families in KITH’s Transitional Housing Program.  The current need is to replace the baseboard heaters,  paint and freshen up the unit to prepare it for a family to move in as soon as possible.  If you and your small group would like to know more to see if this is a project that you could take on please contact Dan Walker at danw777@gmail.comwww.kithcares.org
